ATV Lift Kits

Types of ATV Lift Kits
There are four basic types of lift kits

1. Strut Extensions: of the four, this is the easiest to install. It consists of a spacer which is installed on the existing strut to extend it. That’s it. This makes it just as easy to remove.  However, because the geometry of the suspension is changed, this type lift kit may effect ride quality.
2. Coil Spacers: this kit consists of a spacer that is placed above the existing coil spring at the spring buckets; in effect, extending the length of the coil spring. Generally, this would require adding shock absorber extensions. The advantage of this lift kit is that the effect of the geometry of the suspension is minimized with little effect on ride quality.
3. Torsion Keys: the more difficult to install of the four, this kit consists of replacement torsion bars. You will need a torsion key to make the necessary adjustments to the bar after installation.
4. Block Kits: designed for the rear suspension of your ATV, it is similar to coil spacers. It’s primary purpose is to adjust for sag in the rear due to extended use of carrying heavy loads.  It’s a cheaper alternative to replacing the springs.

Kit Installation
If you are handy and have a set of tools, you could probably do the installation yourself. It may require purchasing additional tools, however. Be aware that you will bear the risk of improper installation, which will affect the wear and tear of the suspension and the way your ATV will handle. If you are unsure, it is best to leave the installation to a professional.

Additional Considerations
If you plan to run your ATV predominantly in rough terrain, you should consider a lift kit. Lift kits, when installed properly, will increase the off-road safety of your vehicle by improving ground clearance.   

On the negative side is the that the installation of a lift kit will raise the center of gravity of your vehicle.  As the center of gravity is increased, the potential for a rollover also increases.  As a cautionary note, be sure to reduce speeds when performing sharp turns, and avoid very steep side grades.

Keep in mind that there are partial lifts, and full lifts.  The higher the lift, the more concern regarding center of gravity, and the more difficult it could be for a proper alignment. 

Once the installation is complete, it is best to get the suspension properly aligned. This will ensure the longest life for your tires and suspension parts.
